The garden takes inspiration from the 20th Century Basque artist Eduardo Chileda, with a striking central structure that references one of his many ceramic sculptures which explore voids and negative space. Drawn to these sculptures they connected the idea of exploring When does an enclosure begin to create a sense of sanctuary by defining a space? With the work of the Lady Garden Foundation. The central sculptural form in the garden creates a space that is safe, comfortable and private, conducive to allowing time for difficult, emotional conversations.
Beyond the sculptural forms a sense of sanctuary is created with water and planting.
Stone limed paths lead into a sunken central area where water spills out from a pool into deep rills that extend out to the garden boundaries.
Planting takes cues from a warm Mediterranean palette with soft pinks, silver greys and glaucous foliage dominating. This evokes a sense of calm and relaxation.
Fun and irreverent, the garden is designed to have a non conventional feel, reflective of and embracing the approach of the Lady Garden Foundation's work.
